The Restaurant Green Zone Comes To Vancouver IslandApril 22, 2008 ERM BioSource has launched the popular used fryer oil collection service program called Restaurant Green Zone (www.restaurantgreenzone.com ) on Vancouver Island. Restaurant patrons across Vancouver Island will soon have a new display sticker to watch out for on restaurant doors and cash registers. They will also be able to check online to see which restaurants are part of the program.
“We feel that restaurants on Vancouver Island will support us because of our clean environmental record and community service” says Mike Perrier President and CEO of Port Coquitlam, B.C. based ERM BioSource. The Restaurant Green Zone pays $0.05 per litre for qualifying used frying oil. However, the restaurant has the option of donating their payment to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of British Columbia.
The program is supported by the British Columbia Restaurant and Food Service Association (BCRFA), the Alliance of Beverage License Establishments (ABLE-BC), and the British Columbia Hotel Association (BCHA). “With the success of the program in other regions, we expect our members on Vancouver Island to see the benefits in joining ” says Sharron Tulk Director of Marketing for BCRFA. The Restaurant Green Zone program is open to all restaurants and food facilities, however, the program only accepts non-hydrogenated vegetable oils from participating restaurants. Therefore, restaurant goers will have peace of mind seeing The Restaurant Green Zone Sticker because the program is good for the heart and the planet.
For those restaurants that do not qualify for the program due to poor oil, ERM BioSource in following the lead outlined by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and has launched the CONVERT Campaign. ERM BioSource has secured special pricing incentives from major food distributors, like Neptune Food Serviceand Sysco Foodservice, to help patrons switch to non hydrogenated oils. Some municipalities are getting on board with recognition programs for restaurants that convert.
ERM BioSource will begin collection service from Nanaimo to Victoria with further expansion into the island by mid summer.
