100% Recycled plastic collection containers for the collection of oil waste

May 8, 2008

They use 100% recycled plastic collection containers to collect their oil waste which is picked up by a truck that is run on biodiesel. Aberdeen Mall of Kamloops, BC has become the first mall to throw away their centralized waste oil collection bin in exchange for smaller collection containers. “The concept is unique because we are minimizing spillage and unsightly areas for our mall as well as freeing up much needed space for future recycling opportunities ” says Daryl Mount Operations Manager for Aberdeen Mall.

The Oil is collected by ERM BioSource under the Restaurant Green Zone Program which pays the restaurant for this service.. The program is supported by the BC Restaurant and Foodservice Association (BCRFA), The Alliance of Beverage License Establishments (ABLE-BC), and the BC Hotel Association (BCHA).

In Canada, most mall tenant agreements require tenants to dispose of their own waste oil, however, they have been reluctant to enforce these requirements due to limited availability for proper disposal services.

“I think malls are going to expect a higher standard from their waste oil collection companies because of this program” Says Michael Perrier, President and CEO of ERM BioSource. “Our environmental record is clean both with our restaurants and with environmental regulatory municipalities.”

ERM BioSource expects to roll out this program throughout the province.

ERM BioSource, a participating member of the Recycling Council of British Columbia , is a processing facility for biofuels servicing the needs of British Columbia.
